Mental illnesses are not a physical issue and are therefore very difficult to notice. Mental illnesses go unnoticed and untreated every day in thousands of people around the world, often because the symptoms have not yet surfaced or been discernible. According to a Victorian government website, an estimated 20% of females have an undiagnosed eating disorder. One in twenty Australians are affected by an eating disorder (ABC Health and Wellbeing, 2014) and in 2003, The Renfrew Centre Foundation for Eating Disorders collected data stating that eating disorders affect 70 million individuals worldwide. Almost 50% of people with eating disorders are diagnosed with depression, ultimately making their lives a lot harder to live. Sufferers of eating disorders have the highest mortality rate out of all psychiatric illnesses. It is therefore increasingly difficult to prevent an eating disorder when the signs, such as dieting are becoming so normal in our society.
